'Virginia Bright Leaf' tobacco is a flue-cured tobacco that was primarily used for cigarette and pipe blends.
Bright leaf tobaccos became popular in the early 1800s as demand for milder and more aromatic products arose. Farmers experimented with growing and curing methods for years but the big breakthrough, like many great innovations,
occurred by accident. Fires had been used to cure tobacco but it was in about 1839 that someone used charcoal to restart a curing fire. This created a high heat condition which resulted in a bright, yellow cured leaf.
