A well known family heirloom tomato from West Virginia.
Plants are vigorous and produce an abundance of large red
tomatoes weighing from 8 ounces up to a pound.
Fruit are mostly smooth with few blemishes and very little
cracking. Taste is very good having a sweet, rich flavor.

Cardinal

Fruit are a beautiful red color, flattened globe in shape, and
are medium in size averaging 5-8 ounces with some reaching 10
ounces.
Flavor is good having a slight tart taste.
Released in 1884 by W. Atlee Burpee. Our seed source is from

originally developed for canners, having desirable market
qualities and withstood shipping over long distances.
Fruit is medium/large averaging 6 to 10 ounces with a beautiful
red color, smooth with few blemishes and have an exceptional
flavor.
Introduced by the A. W. Livingston Seed company in 1883.

Howard German

This is an old variety, extremely productive, and great for
canning, paste, or sauces.
Paste type fruit are about 5 1/2 in length, very meaty and weigh
around 5 ounces.
Fruit shape can be somewhat variable. Most fruit are shaped like
a plump banana pepper,
although some may look more like an elongated pear. Plants are
attractive with a wispy, fern like appearance while still giving
good fruit protection.

Introduced prior to 1936. Fruit are bright red, flattened
globe shape, averaging 6-10 ounces and show good crack
resistance. Yield is moderate to high and fruit ripen up evenly
with no green shoulders.
When introduced it was said to be “The Best for Canning” but we
think it makes a good slicing tomato also. Our original seed source was

Once a prominent leading tomato here in Tennessee it has become
quite rare.
Red fruits are slightly flattened globe shaped and average 6-10
ounces in weight.
Fruit is somewhat firm having good texture and makes for a good
road side tomato. Good slicing tomato.

Plants are tree-type with rugose leaves and are very hardy
reaching a height of 5 feet by season end.
Fruits are red, quite juicy and have a great flavor. Fruit size
is small weighing 2-5 ounces.
Hard for me to resist snacking on these while working in the
field.

Glenn Parker of New Zealand in 2003, he gave the following
information:
Bred at the Levin Agricultural Research Centre (New Zealand) in
1943 and released in 1949.
Commercially it was not popular as the fruit was "too small".
It became the most popular New Zealand home garden variety.
